The incident occurred in Sullivan County at 6:45 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, in the area of 196 Rio Dam Road in Lumberland.

According to Sullivan County Sheriff's Office Undersheriff Eric Chaboty, an investigation revealed that two men were riding a single four-wheel ATV westbound on Rio Dam Road when they struck a deer in the roadway.

Chaboty said this caused the quad to leave the pavement and strike a tree. Upon impact, both the driver and the passenger were ejected.

Emergency service personnel responded to the scene and attempted to administer CPR.

Both men were pronounced dead a short time later by Sullivan County Coroner Alan Kesten, Chaboty said.

The men were identified as Orange County residents Steven P. Quinn, age 23, and passenger John H. Brehm, age 24, both of Sparrow Bush.

Chaboty said the pair were reportedly traveling from a local hunting camp to a location where a colleague requested assistance tracking a deer shot with a bow earlier in the day.

Sheriff’s deputies were assisted at the scene by:

  • New York State Police
  • Lumberland Fire and EMS
  • Highland Lake Fire Department
